I own a 1995 2.7 Nissan Terrano diesel.
It stalls occasionally either when I turn into my drive way and apply the brakes or when I reverse out of a carpark.
Any ideas on what the problem maybe?
I have also been advised that the battery needs replacing, could this have anything to do with the problem?

I doubt very much whether the battery has anything to do with the stalling problem.
It is more likely to be a problem related to the fuel injection pump which can allow air to enter the fuel flow causing unwanted aeration of the fuel. This will cause stalling and will progressively get worse over time.
If this is the case then you can expect a fairly large bill as the pump assembly needs to be removed and stripped to replace worn seals. Unfortunately once the pump is dismantled there is bound to be other worn parts that need to be replaced. An estimate to overhaul the pump could be around the $1500 mark.
It's an educated guess only on my part, the vehicle needs to go to a diesel specialist to confirm exactly what the problem is.
