I'm confused as to my current 2000 Pug 206 XR (5spd manual) gearbox. It seems a bit crunchy/notchy and stiff to go 4th to 3rd, and 1st to 2nd. Could it be the force that is put on it, or could this be a problem with the gearbox (i.e. a problem with engaging with the gear?). I've heard on the internet that this can be a bit problematic with 206's, but I'm asking here just to shed some light onto this issue (I'm a novice in terms of technical aspects of cars). The clutch was replaced Aug 2011, since the car over-revved and flew away uncontrolled (this was fixed, due to the clutch). Any help would be grand!

The Peugeot 206 can suffer with notchy gear shifts if the wrong gearbox oil is used. When the clutch was changed, it is possible that some oil was lost when the drive shafts were removed, so it could have been topped up with a heavier oil. This is quite common as many workshops will carry carry an 80W90 grade gearbox oil in stock (which is commonly used in other vehicles) and assume it will be OK. But we're told this gearbox should be filled with a fully synthetic 75W80, or even lighter grade of oil, as it is particularly prone to notchy gear shifts with even a slightly heavier oil.
So, as a first step, I suggest you find a specialist who knows these cars well and ensure the gearbox is filled with the correct oil.
