The rear door opens and closes okay, but the gas struts don't seem to have any gas left.
Am I able to get them re-gassed or would they need to be replaced with second-hand or new struts?

There are companies who can re-gas the struts, many of whom offer a mobile service. Just Google "gas strut services" and there should be a local company in your area.
