what should i expect to pay for a cambelt change on a 2001 petrol pajero

I believe this is the GDi V6 engine. It is quite a big job, so once you include the belt, water pump etc, you will be unlikely to get any change from $1,000.
Ask your repairer for a price (including GST) and ask for an itemised account of what they will be changing. Don't be fooled by cheap estimates that don't include the add-ons which will inevitably be needed once they start the job.
