Can you explain to me why my 3litre 2000YM Honda Odyssey has an un-braked towing capacity almost exactly the same as a Honda Legend (not surprising as they are almost the same weight).
The braked towing weight of the Odyssey however is only half that of the legend.
Makes no sense to me!!

Braked towing weight centres around a number of factors including but not exclusive to;
- vehicle braking capacity
- transmission performance
- programmed engine management (computer mapping)
- body structure/design
- loads applied when slowing on a steep descent
- uphill loads.
The un-braked load is usually about 500kg which both vehicles would handle comfortably.
Honda have obviously decided the overall design of the Odyssey does not allow for the same braked load as the Legend.
The two vehicles are very different with the Odyssey designed more as a people mover which it does really well.
The Legend is an all round much more robust vehicle so structurally and mechanically it would be built to handle the extra weight and therefore tow larger braked loads.
Be careful going outside the manufactures recommendations. The Japanese product in general is unbelievably reliable provided you stay within recommended guidelines.
