I have just had my L/F wheel bearing replaced in my 2004 V8 Falcon which included changing the complete hub.
A couple of things:
My mechanic said this is a common fault with these cars. Is there any truth to this?
Secondly, it is necessary to replace the whole hub and not just the wheel bearings themselves?
And finally, the R/F hub assembly was replaced at the same time. Is this necessary?

I have not heard of this being a common problem but that doesn't mean it's not.
It is becoming more and more a common practice for the entire hub including bearings to be replaced as a complete assembly on a number of cars.
You will find the bearing assembly is a pre-packed one piece unit and not designed to be replaced separately from the hub. The type of grease used for example is very critical to the life of the bearings especially when you think about the high temperatures and loads generated in the front hub area under hard braking and cornering.
Time saved is another factor in replacing the complete assembly as is ensuring the bearings are installed correctly and are free from contamination.
It's hard to be critical of recommending both hubs should be replaced at the same time as both endure the same stresses and temperatures especially on a vehicle such as yours.
Having said that, the customer should always be given the option by the repairer.
