Car is a 1999 Legacy B4. When I switch the headlamps (HID) on, they won't turn off again. Switching off the ignition turns the lights off and resets them, so off on the stalk switch is off, untill they are switched on again and the problem repeats. (The side lights turn off as normal, it's only the dip beam) Seems like a faulty relay, Any thoughts?.

I'd agree with your thoughts - it may be a faulty relay or control module, however, to be certain it is best to have it attended to by an auto-electrician.

I already have 2 autoelectricians scratching their heads. I've also asked the dealer and they say, the NZ new wiring diagrams don't correspond as my B4 is an import and HID's were never an option on NZ new.

Maybe I should get that WRX STi I've been llooking at?

The STi sounds like a great option!! However, I would have thought that someone could sort this out. Perhaps a Subaru main dealer may be able to source the Japanese wiring diagram via Subaru NZ?

SOLVED! It seems the daylight driving lights I had installed were causing the problem. They were wired into the loom, but seemed to upset the HID lights. Taking their power from another point solved the headlight ptoblem. Looks like the old Leggy lives a little longer. At least it gives Subaru more time to improve the grille styling of the STI before I buy one :-)

Pleased to know the problem is solved. After-market electrical accessories have a lot to answer for, (or at least, the installation method).
The new Impreza is out now, so I guess the WRX and STi won't be far behind - hopefully they've addressed your grille gripe!!
