Hi, some people say D4 engine is bad, do not buy one. I have got a toyota premio 2002 with D4 v v t i engine. just wondering is it the same as D4, how got is it compared to D4?

It is the same engine. We are not going to rubbish this engine completely, but it does seem to have a characteristic and reputation of a low speed surge and rough idle which some owners find very frustrating and annoying.

It seems even the Toyota network struggles to overcome these issues and often their best advice to owners is to recommend the use of the highest octane fuel possible.

This really is out of character for Toyota who have enjoyed a long reputation in NZ for their reliability and longevity.

Did this fix the problem as I'm looking at buying an Avensis with the same engine

Running high octane (ie; the more expensive 98 RON which is available in some service stations) may help the problem. However, carbon build-up and rough running is a known problem with the D4 engine so I'd think twice about buying.
