Hi, this is really basic but I noticed that the coolant reservoir is nearly empty on my Toyota Avensis Verso. The attendant at the service station said I should top it up with water but I'm sure I heard somewhere I should be using distilled water and engine coolant. Is this true and where do I get distilled water from?

The loss of water is your biggest worry as the reservoir should not require regular topping up.

Ordinary tap water will be fine to reset the levels but you need to get the car into your preferred repairer and ask them to check for a possible water leak.

Once the cooling system has been checked out and any repairs carried out, then the correct type and amount of inhibitor can be added.

The distilled water theory comes from the days when batteries required regular top-ups.
