I currently own a Honda Accord Euro Tourer. It is a beautiful car to drive and I love it. However with the cost of petrol these days it is starting to hurt. Especially as it uses the more expensive 95 fuel. I travel approximately 12,000km a year. Most of my travel is under 100km one way and the occasional family holiday over long distances.

I recently saw an advert for the Peugeot 508SW 2.0HDI which claims a average consumption of 5.7 lit/100km. The car is very well equiped and after driving it, I immediately loved it. If I had not known, I would have thought it ran on petrol as it was very quiet.

I am now contemplating whether it is worth changing from the Honda to the Peugeot. I have never owned a European make nor have I owned a diesel.

Is it worth changing? What should I be looking for and what are the pitfalls I should be aware of? Will I get a good resale if I were to sell the Peugeot after say 3 or 4 years?

Thanks

On straight fuel consumption the Diesel wins easily although I doubt you will get anywhere near the claimed consumption from the Peugeot on a regular basis especially on cold short runs.

The other consideration is the change over cost. You may be able to buy a lot of petrol and still have money in the bank for what it would cost you to make the swap.

I suggest you ask your local Peugeot Dealer what the regular servicing costs for this vehicle (over say a three year period) are and compare them with what you have been paying for the Honda.

Remember also, you will pay Road User Charges and more for your registration with the Diesel.

There is no doubting the drivability, specification levels and performance of the Peugeot.

Just don’t make the decision to change based solely around fuel consumption.
