I am having starting problems with my 2008 Fiat Punto JTD Sport Diesel that has done only 5600 kilometres.
It is apparent occasionally, whether hot or cold, when the engine fires and "kicks" but without running. I can overcome this problem if I firstly apply a third of throttle, and the engine will then "catch" and run normally.
I am wondering if the injectors need cleaning, or could it be that the oil level is too high, being a good centimetre over-full after servicing?

I would think it unlikely that the injectors would need cleaning after just 5600km. Also, I doubt whether a slight overfill of oil would be the problem either, although this should be attended to.
It sounds more like an engine management or fuel injection system problem to me. This would include looking at any intake or air filter housing leaks, ensuring the dip stick is firmly in place and oil filler cap is properly secured.
Being mindful that temperatures are colder this time of year, it is possible that the problem may have been there from new, but it is only starting to manifest itself with the cooler weather.
Your Fiat dealer should have the diagnostic equipment to investigate this problem under your new car warranty.
The best advice would be to take it to the Fiat dealer as while the vehicle is still under guarantee you may void any warranty by having someone other than an authorised dealer work on the vehicle.
