Was not working when we bought, but much engine work had been done, so am assuming that a wire has been left disconnected. What should we be looking for?

Best suggestion I can make is to take the vehicle into your local auto electrician for investigation.

You can control your costs by stipulating you are prepared to pay for say an hour’s labour only to investigate and hopefully fix the problem.

Anything after that you can ask to be contacted to authorise any additional work.
