Is it common in a Rover that the starter motor and alternator needs replacing all the time. mine have been replaced twice on each this year, should I just flick it.

No, it is not normal for these repairs to be done twice in such a short time if the repairs were done without compromise.

You say the starter motor and alternator were replaced, does this mean complete units were fitted and if so, were they exchange reconditioned units or sourced from a auto wrecker with no reconditioning carried out?

If they were reconditioned in some way, there should be some sort of warranty to fall back on if you keep the car and have further problems.

If they were sourced as second-hand parts then there are no guarantees one of these components will not fail again.

This model Rover does not enjoy the greatest reputation for reliability to be honest, so you could expect more unpleasant surprises if things run true to form.
