Our an emission warning light came on in our 2001 Odyssey. Honda dealer says we need a new part costing >$600. Looking up the fault on the web it appears that it is an exhaust recirculating value of some discription that is blocked and can be cleaned relatively easily and cheaply. What advice do you have Jack?

Don't believe everything you read on websites.

Often these repairs are not as easy as they seem and we would imagine that some Honda Dealers have been caught out trying to clean out a EGR valve and finding it to be temporary fix only.

Most franchise Dealers would much rather fit a genuine part rather than try a repair which they can't guarrantee will work.

It’s your call really, if you want a repairer to remove and clean the valve then it would be your risk and could well be money well spent.

If however, it doesn’t work or turns out to be temporary repair only, you will be faced with additional costs to sort it out properly.

It may pay to ask the Honda Dealer concerned just how confident they are the EGR valve is in fact the problem as the first step.
