You've already responded to a previous question about head-cracking issues with Toyota Surfs.
However, all my research (mostly internet forums) seems to suggest that this was a problem specifically related to the 2.4l models, which had insufficient/deficient cooling and were perhaps being put under greater driving strain than the 2.4l engine could cope with.
The same research suggests that this is no longer an issue with the 3.0l models.
As I am considering buying a 3.0l diesel surf (93 - 96 model) I'd be interested in your comments.

I would definitely be looking for a vehicle with a proven service history including cooling system flushing if at all possible.
This does not eliminate the risk totally but it does provide some peace of mind that the cooling system is in reasonable condition.
I would also be inclined to have the system flushed regardless once you have purchased and add only Toyota approved inhibitor. Cooling system related problems are the biggest worry in any vehicle as they can cause so much damage.
You are correct in thinking the 3.0 litre engines are a lot better but it would be dangerous to assume they are totally bullet proof.
Apart from cooling systems, just remember you are buying old diesel technology and engine repairs (injectors / pumps) and servicing can be very expensive. This is a fact you have to accept with diesels.
When they are going well the fuel costs are extremely low in comparison to petrol and their low down torque is awesome for towing but they can cost an arm and a leg to maintain at times.
Take your time Scott and try to choose a vehicle they has had some previous love and care.
