Live in Earthquake zone where all the dust, dirt and grit is getting into the engine and belts. How do I stop the belts squeeking without spending a fortune with a mechanic..again

Firstly, are you sure it's belt squeal? Secondly, are the belts correctly adjusted? If the answer is "yes" to both then you may be able to eliminate belt squeal with a product called dry-lube. Dry lube is a stick-like product that you apply to the belt whan the engine is running. You need to be very careful not to tangle yourself in the belts though!!! Also, prior to applying it and with the engine OFF, try to dust off any debris with a cloth first. Finally, if your car has one of the later type multi-V belts, they are particularly prone to getting dust and grit in the V's, so will need cleaning off particularly well. You should be able to obtain dry-lube from somewhere like Repco.
Finally, best wishes - we're all thinking of you in Christchurch!

Thanks for the info, definately belt squeal (sounds like a strangled cat) hopefully the dry-lube will help. Christchurch Rocks...literally!
