hi, I have a 1998 Mazda Famillia, I have owned it for about five years but the whole time I have owned it the exhaust makes a noise similar to that of stones in the exhaust, I have had several people look at it but have yet to find an answer - would you have any idea what is likely to be causing this?

Without hearing it, it's hard to say, however it's likely to be loose baffles in the muffler. The only real fix is to replace the muffler. I'd be surprised if a mechanic wouldn't be able to trace the noise for you.
