It sounds like a fast idle problem of some sort. Vehicles with fuel injection and electronic engine management systems have fast idle controls that work very much like the old driver operated choke on the carburetted engines.

The cold start/fast idle system may work off temperature and the control valve could be sticking and not allowing additional air to bleed into the inlet manifold to create a fast idle situation.

Have you thought about leaving the car overnight and asking your preferred repairer to try starting and driving the car from stone cold?

An engine like this would only need to be partially warm to bypass the initial cold start settings so your garage may not be experiencing the actual problem.

It may also be worth giving your local Mazda Dealer a call and asking if this is a common problem or not. They may be able to suggest some quick checks that can be done.
