My 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage just failed a warrant based on a steering rack boot being torn and in need of replacement.
Could you give me a ballpark figure as to how much this should cost me?

Not a real biggie but some garages will suggest a wheel alignment check after the boot has been replaced to ensure the front wheels are tracking correctly and to stop future uneven tyre wear.
This is because what is called the tie-rod end is removed as part of the steering boot replacement and this is where the alignment is adjusted.
Other garages will simple refit everything “as it was” and not bother checking the alignment especially if there is no evidence of uneven wear.
No right or wrong answer here although some garages can get carried away with a full on alignment check which isn’t really necessary. All they need to check is the toe-in or toe- out of the front wheels unless they can convince you otherwise.
For a vehicle of this age I would be surprised if the total cost exceeded $80 - $100 including a quick alignment check.
