Hi I recently purchased a Mazda CX-5 (2015) 2.2L Diesel on the recommendation of some “Mazda fans” and have been happy with the car so far. However, since then, a number of problems with this Mazda (many with very low kms) have come to my attention. These include; need to replace the entire engine, need to replace turbos, oil/lubrication issues, diesel appearing in the oil, loss of power, high fuel consumption, stuck in limp mode, unexplained multiple dash warning lights. Many of these issues seem to be connected to the problems with the DPF and/or EGR systems. Are these issues really as common as they appear to be and what maintenance strategies are recommended to eliminate or minimise them?

Hi there,
Yes there does seem to be a common trend of the issues you explained with the Mazda 2.2L diesel engines. The common reasoning that I have seen for the bulk of the problems seem to stem from the DPF filter not able to regenerate to burn off the soot it removes from the exhaust gasses. The reason of this is put down to lack of vehicle use and sustained open road driving which is where the filter is designed to super heat and carryout the burning off of the soot mode. This is not the only manufacturer with diesel vehicles that have a DPF filter to have know issues for low mileage use. Traditionally diesel vehicles were purchased by those who travel a lot and why a lot of diesels have high km's quick on the clock, but now days this trend has changed a bit and issues are starting to surface.
