The engine of my 1999 Opel Astra always stops when I come off the motorway. In fact the engine stops even when I go 80Km/h and come to a stop. The check engine light along with several other lights go on. It takes several tries (around 3-5), around 1 minute between each try before the engine will eventually restart. Just wondering what's wrong with my car? My mechanic said I should get an electronic diagonsis somewhere, where can I get a diagnosis and how much would it cost me?

It sounds like you need a find new mechanic.

Diagnostic tools or scanners are now a vital piece of workshop equipment as the majority of work is carried out on vehicles fitted with electronic engine management systems.

Even if your repairer doesn’t have this equipment they should have contacts within the industry to outwork these jobs to.

Take the vehicle to, or call, another local repairer and ask them if they have the scanning equipment compatible with your vehicle.

Most garages have a set hook-up fee but these costs can vary so it pays to ask first.

Problems like you are experiencing are not uncommon with Opel/Astra’s of this age.
