Hi

My car failed a WOF due to broken fog lights, I asked the garage just to remove them so it could pass. (I've done this on a previous vehicle).

However the garage said that because the vehicle has fog lights (and there is a space for them), the vehicle HAS to have them for a WOF.. As in they HAVE to be replaced with new ones.
It's been 2 weeks now and they haven't got back to me with a price yet.

So my question is.. Are they correct? Or can I just take them out?

Thanks

Hi there,
Fog lights are not mandatory fitment for a WoF even though a vehicle may be fitted with them from factory. So they can be disabled, removed or repaired as per rule found here: https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general/lighting/front-and-rear-fog-lamps
If a vehicle has fog lamps they need to meet criteria for a wof, but the rule has recently changed that allows both lights to be disconnected where previously it was complete removal that was required.

Thanks for your reply Cade.
That clears things up, they are trying to tell me that the rules have recently changed and they have to be there for a WOF.

I had read that link but I couldn't figure out what I wanted to know from it.

Thanks again

Ah, under reason for rejection is says:
Note 5
A forward-facing permitted lamp that does not comply with the equipment, condition and performance requirements must be made to comply, be removed from the vehicle, or be disabled so that it does not emit a light.
