Hi,
I have a 2001 Ford Mondeo station-wagon with a blown head gasket. The problem is currently minor enough that I can drive around town without overheating, but I'm sceptical that using a head gasket repair additive in the coolant is a wise move. (Is it worth a shot?) As such I'm considering (as an alternative to replacing the car), either having a lower-ks second-hand engine installed or having the engine reconditioned / rebuilt as necessary. Which would you suggest is the best option? What would be a realistic total to budget for each of these two options?

Hi there,
If you consider the relatively low value for a 2001 Mondeo without a blown headgasket, I would imagine it not economical to pay someone to replace or repair the engine. If it was the difference between scrap or an additive, it might buy you some time. I would say $3-5k for any kind of headgasket replacement or secondhand engine replacement if an engine can still be found or a few hundred dollars as scrap.
