My normally very reliable 1998 VW Golf had touble starting last night. The car responded when I turned the key but before it started running it cut out - only started on the 5th attempt. I had a new battery fitted 3 weeks ago - it didn't sound like a flat battery - there was plenty of power from that. Is it possibily a starter motor on its way out?

No it sounds more like a engine problem to me.

If the engine turns over OK but does not start, then it eliminates any problems with the battery or starter motor.

I think a visit to your preferred repairer is in order. They may suggest checking the obvious things first such as spark plugs and filters.
