Hi!

Good day!

I had my Holden Captiva serviced last Friday. While driving over the weekend we noticed a strong smell of burning oil. Upon opening the bonnet, I saw the engine oil cap not screwed on properly. There is oil everywhere in the engine bay.

The places we went to over the weekend has unsealed/gravel roads. It was dry so dust and debris are flying in all directions. My concern now is that the engine is at risk of early deterioration due to any unknown particle/dust that may have had made its way inside the engine. Service people think that there shouldn’t be a problem as the engine has positive pressure inside but I am not sure about that. What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Hi there,
I would also expect that there would be very little opportunity for contaminants to be allowed to enter the system via the loose cap, as evidenced by the oil being blown out along with the pressure and not sucked in.
