I have a 2005 BMW Z4. The battery was replaced about 2 months ago. After some problems with starting the starter motor was replaced last week. This week, the alternator packed up resulting in an expense repair (which is still outstanding). Can you advise if this is just a run of bad luck as the original parts fail or if the two issues might be connected? Also, is there anything you think I should be looking out for to avoid another break-down situation? Thanks

Hi there,
As the parts are totally separate as far as physical location is concerned, it could be a coincidence and just par for the course of an aging European car. However they are linked by the battery cables, and if somehow the vehicle had too much power go to the starter and alternator it could cause damage. This is very unlikely but not impossible. The parts would need to be inspected as to why the faulted, they may have just worn out.
