The noise definitely sounds like a CV joint and yes your friend could well have had this noise for several years in their car.

The knock will initially not make the car un-driveable however, the longer it is left the higher the chance it will eventual develop into something more serious.

The knock is due to wear sometimes caused by road grim entering the joint due to a split protective rubber boot.

If the boots (one on each side) are split, there is potential for the grease used to lubricate the joints to be thrown onto the brake disc. If this condition was apparent at time of a Warrant of Fitness inspection, the car could be rejected .

Suggest you let your local garage have a listen to the knock and check the boots for damage.
