Hi. I drive a BMW 3 series station wagon (2006, 2l). Have been quoted $1,300 for purchase and installation of a new alternator.
Can you please advise whether this is reasonable for the part and installation and what the normal ball-park figure is for these type of services?

Costs would depend on the location of the part and where it comes from. There really is no generic price to expect for this type of job.
Ask for a breakdown of costs and then look at the costs individually- labour could be a few hundred, plus the part- which could be new/used or refurbished.
