Hi

My automatic diesel Terrano has began stalling. It happens when i am sitting in idle and then apply the accelerator to pull off. It only happens occasionally, not everytime.

I've tried putting a couple of different fault code device on it, but to no avail, the devices will not communicate with the engine or get codes.

I have looked at the MAF and it looks clean and i had a quick look at the fuel and can see no water/ impurities, from just looking at it.

I also took it in for a service last week where the mechanics have changed the oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter.

Any ideas what i can try next?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi there,
There will generally only be fault codes stored if the engine warning light illuminates. As the vehicle gets a bit older, the throttle control might wear and play up, maybe check that the intake Is clean, the idle might need turning up a little bit to compensate it it's a bit low. If it's worse when cold, you might need to test the glowplugs. Maybe make sure that the fuel system maintains pressure and the small valves in the fuel filter housing are not blocked or sticky.

Thanks for the reply Cade.

The engine light has come on just before a stall and also flashes once the car is stalled but the OBD 2 devices wont communicate with it via the Nissan adapter. Is the ddl1 protocol an issue with the communication?

When you say intake, what do you mean specifically please?

Whats the best method to check fuel pressure?

Thanks again

I'm not sure, there might be a manual code checking method where you earth out a connector and count the flashes and get the code reference.
Intake throttle flap/butterfly and intake manifold specifically- check for dirt and oil. Fuel pressure might be better to be carried out by a diesel specialist as it could be messy if not done correctly.

Hi cade

I've found the fault codes 11,12 and 47
MAF sensor
Speed sensor
Crankshaft position sensor

Got a feeling it might be the third option as I've read intermittent stalling and rough idling are symptoms. Struggling to find the location of sensor or info on where it could be.
