I have a 2011 Mazda Demio which has failed it's warrant due to a couple of things, one being that it needs a new steering rack. I have been quoted around $800 for the part and then $500 in labour to get this fixed. The mechanic also told me that I should buy a new part rather than an old one as I then shouldn't have to replace it for the rest of the life of my car. My question is, does this price seem reasonable and do I need to get a brand new part?

Hi there,
I think the price sounds fair and reasonable- especially if they are quoting for new parts. I think if a 2011 car needs a new rack, then maybe there could bean issue with it and using a secondhand part might fail again after a short period of time and leave you back where you are now,. If you are using secondhand parts- make sure they give a good warranty- or maybe see if a refurbished part is available.
