Hi, I've just had the service on my seven year old Citroen DS3 after a warning light indicated an emission control problem. The dealer is saying that they need to strip the engine to look at the timing chain and tensioner etc, but I think this was done three and a half years ago after it went into limp mode. Having only done 50,000km, is this a reasonable time frame to be needing it done again? Thanks.

Hi there,
Unless there is an issue with the parts used, there generally should be no need to replace the cam chain system on most cars. For example cambelts have a replacement life/interval but I've never seen any for chain driven engines.
Even less likely to need it twice- I would be asking questions with the manufacturer as to the parts used as they have not lasted a reasonable amount of time (1st and 2nd time).

Thanks, pretty much what I was thinking! The work was done at Citroen's cost last time even though the car was three months out of warranty, but they were less than forthcoming as to exactly what they did and/or replaced/repaired as Citroen were picking up the cost. Apparently being the vehicle owner didn't confer me the right to know exactly what they did. :\
