Hi. I'm looking at buying a 2001 Pajero IO GDI. I heard you must run the GDIs on higher grade gas (95 or 98) or it can cause problems and got told to walk away if they don't. Do you agree? I know the owner of the Pajero I'm looking at runs it on 95 gas, but I'm not sure of the previous owners. It has done 160,000kms. What should I do? Would an AA pre-purchase check be able to tell if there is a problem concerning this? Thank you so much

Hi there,
The early Mitsubishi GDI engines were a bit of a nightmare, and had a high potential for issues. I would think at 17 years old, it might be one that could have higher than normal running/ maintenance costs. However, I would have thought that most issues would have already developed if it was going to (or just about to). The AA inspection is primarily a visual inspection but should be able to note if the engine was displaying an issue at the time of inspection.
