Hi, the check engine light started coming on in my 2000 fielder a couple of months ago. My mechanic did the diagnostics test which came up as light on bank 1. So far we have changed the air intake manifold/ gasket, spark plugs, a diode and the oxygen sensor and the light still keeps coming back on. Apparently the next option is a smoke test? I generally trust my mechanic but I am frustrated that I have spent so much and the light still keeps coming on. Has my mechanic missed something??? I was planning to replace my car next year anyway, and want to know how much a smoke test will cost and what the likely outcomes are? I am wondering whether just to give up and buy a new car now? .... Thanks, Kate

Hi there,
A smoke test is used to see if there are any leaks from the engine internal system (intake and exhaust systems mainly), the cost is more influenced by the labour to make sure that the system is sealed so that any leaks can be seen. Intermittent faults are the hardest to fix, as there is no quick way to tell if it is 100% repaired until the light comes back. The mechanic should be able to test a part is faulty before replacing it, (or advise if they are not sure) and be prepared to put the part back in if it wasn't the problem.
