Hi there I took my car in for work to be done BMW118i 2006 kms 156,838. A service was done and also required work due to a fault being reported by way of an error light. The further description on the invoice for this work was “oil consumption, remove microfilter housing, remove coil harness, remove coils, remove cam cover, remove valvetronic assy, remove vanos adjusters, fit tooling to compress valves, disassemble, remove individual seals & replace, reassemble with new gaskets & seals. Check for faults valvetronic motor failed. While engine apart replace vavletronic motor and power supply relay. Reassemble and test OK. Clear fault memory”. The total invoice was $1377 excl gst for labour (no breakdown) and $1494.38 for parts excl gst. Are you able to comment whether this sounds about right please? I have no idea. I take it to a BMW specialist which I appreciate may be more costly than other non BMW specialist mechanics. Thank you.

Hi there,
This particular work required is very extensive and time consuming, and also the parts are very crucial in the engine operation. They replaced the valve-stem seals in situ, which is a job made more tricky with the engine in place.
So with this in mind, I would think that it is a reasonable charge for such work to be carried out.
