Had a weird rattling noise coming from the engine bay when turning at slow speeds for a couple of months and haven't been able to identify the problem. Recently had the steering get heavy (power/electric steering failure) but has since come right again but not sure if this is related. What is this likely to be?

Sounds like your steering pump is low on fluid, it really would be a good idea to get the vehicle to a workshop to be checked.
