How do these two cars compare as regards reliability and longevity of life and cost of repairs in a general sense? Are they roughly on a par or ???

Yes they are very similar as in small size, fuel economic, and reliable vehicles. As they are getting old, parts may be harder to find and can depend on used parts suppliers or wrecker availability. Neither are difficult to work on so servicing and repair workshops would not find them difficult.
