I recently took my 2007 Honda Civic to the local Honda dealer for its annual service and was astounded to be charged $99 an hour mechanic's fee!

When I queried the rate, I was told that the rate had risen recently but no-one could remember when.

This seems an extraordinarily high charge given that it was a standard service with no specialised Honda technology or input required.

I would therefore like to know an average dealership mechanic's rate and my options should the dealership stick to its guns and refuse to lower the rate.

Hi Geoff,
Hourly rate is very much dependant on geographical location and who owns the company. But we would consider it a normal rate for a private workshop to be around $85-95 an hour and common for a vehicle Manufacturer to charge in excess of $100 per hour.
