Looking at buying a 2001 Hyundai Accent car. Are they generally a reliable car, any common problems known about?

I don't think these cars were too problematic, very similar to a Mitsubishi of this year. As it is 17 years old now, you may find repairs and maintenance a regular thing in order to get through another 12 month warrant.
Things to look for would be cambelt and waterpump replacement, also transmission servicing as this vehicle approaches the 20 year or 200km milestone.
