Hi, my car is a Holden Astra Hatchback 2005. Today the red battery light started flashing on and off while driving. It's a new battery. Took it to the shop, tested fine but we noticed the engine gives a shudder every few seconds. Took to an auto electrical - he said the alternators need to be changed. But he wouldn't give me any idea of cost as he has to open up the engine. So I won't know the total cost after the job is done which is scary. Can you please advise and give me an idea of costs involved? And is there a possible alternative solution? Regards Connie.

Hi there,
The cost of repair would depend on the availability of the parts, a new alternator can start from $500 upwards and a used one may start @ $150. The alternator light can indicate a wiring fault ,loose connection, or charging system failure and needs to be correctly diagnosed and parts priced. The good thing is that most alternators are fairly easy to locate and so the labour cost should be fairly low.
You may need to seek a quote from an auto electrician.

Hi Cade, thanks for your response. I contacted a few garages this morning. It is very difficult to find a honest and straight dealing mechanic. Labour costs quoted were around $200- $300 - is that considered fairly low? Holden will charge $300 just to diagnose it. I think I finally found a fair and honest mechanic who specialises in alternators. He is quite sure it's the regulator.

Hi there,
If the job is more than just a removal and refitting of an alternator and the alternator needs disassembling to check and replace a regulator then naturally the labour will increase, 2-3 hours ($200-300)sounds reasonable.
