Just over a year ago we had our cambelt done. Straight after it was done my husband was driving and the car broke down. The mechanic apologised and apparently fixed the problem. It has been just over a year now and my husband was driving and car lost power and engine light went on. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic and we have been advised $2000 repair and that may not be guaranteed, he had to check cambelt and said that the issue stems from whoever last worked on the cambelt area. We are furious, a good vehicle now to be scrapped. Is there any grounds we have to take original mechanic who did cambelt to disputes? How should we proceed forward. Any advice appreciated, thanks

I would contact the original repairer and offer them an opportunity to remedy the fault based on the information you have received from the information you have received from the mechanic it was towed to.

Have your invoice and current mileage handy too.
If they refuse and you still believe the fault was related to poor workmanship, you can gather this evidence together and approach the MTA if a Member, or other Agency that governs the workshop for a remedy.

Ultimately you can dispute the workshop in the disputes tribunal if poor workmanship has caused the failure.

Thanks Ian,

Will have a look for the invoice and get the mechanic who has it currently to write up a report etc
