A transmission specialist has told us that it will cost $5,000 to replace with a new transmission. The other option is to purchase a second hand transmission for about $3,500.
What would be the best option to choose for the car to maintain its reliability, and not overvalue it? Would we be best to put in a second hand transmission, sell it and upgrade?

If selling the car is on the cards, then a second-hand transmission would be the minimal-loss option. The 5k option would be useful if you intend to keep the car and get the most out of the expensive repairs. A tricky decision to make but if it was mine I would probably go for a used transmission to keep the costs down.
