Rmac2000

I bought a 2005 Toyota Allex import which had only done 60,000km.

Soon after I bought it on about 1 in every 10 engine starts the rev counter wouldn't work - like it was stuck. The speedometer and odometer however work fine during this.

I took it to the dealer about 6 weeks after purchase and they said they had a look but couldn't see anything wrong - sort of tried to pass it off as irrelevant.

I know this isn't a warrantable issue but am I within my rights to ask for this to be repaired under Consumer Guarantees Act? It isn't a major issue but it is a fault and one which makes me wonder what other small issues the car has.

Hi there,
The CGA is at its strongest shortly after purchase, 6 weeks is too soon to be experiencing any problems with a vehicle bought from a trader. It may not be considered reasonable for a vehicle of this age and mileage to have this problem occur. You must continue to give the dealer first right of repair in order for him to locate the fault. But it is hard to remedy a fault that is intermittent, but at least it will be recorded at what date it started to fault.
