I have about 8 months rego left till renewal, but the car will be off the road for about 5 months. Can I put my rego on hold at anytime for the 5 months, then what happens at the end of the 5 month period, does the 5 months automatically get added to the current rego expiry date, how do i get a new label?

Hi there, You can only put the registration on hold once it has expired. Information can be found by following this link: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/licensing-rego/exemptions/put-your-licence-rego-on-hold/

Not quite Cade. You can put through the application (eg, online) prior to expiry, however, the hold will only take effect once the vehicle licence expires. So to answer the original question, with 8 months vehicle licence remaining, any hold will only take effect after 8 months. To get around this, in future you'd have to licence the vehicle for a shorter period to give you the opportunity to put it on hold.
