Hello,

My daughter's engine warning light (orange engine shape light) has just come on after filling up her car. When she got home we played with her petrol filler cap and it went out. It's since come back on a week later.

Strangely enough when we purchased the car from a Registered Car Dealer (they are an AA Appraised Used Car Dealer) 2 months ago there was, what I believe was a fault with the petrol gauge. I sent the following email to them.

"When my daughter picked up the car today the petrol gauge was reading empty and the orange light was on.

She stopped at a petrol station to fill it up, and it would only allow 13L to be put in and the petrol gauge was reading full. I believe it should take 45L."

They phoned their reply, and said this is normal with this model, which I find hard to believe.

I'm now wondering if the two faults are connected.

Do you believe the dealer is obligated to rectify this problem no charge?

If not how much would you expect a diagnostic scan to be to find the fault?

Or do you have any other suggestions why the light is coming on?

Many thanks for your assistance.

Hi Gary,
Because the vehicle has recently been purchased, I recommend taking it right back to the dealer and asking them to diagnose and fix the problems. The engine check light is usually separate and does not monitor the fuel gauge or fuel cap system. It monitors the engine operation and all the sensors to make it run. So you may have two separate faults, the dealer will take it to somewhere to fix as they see fit.
