We are currently looking at purchasing a medium sized SUV, but are getting conflicting views from the vehicle salesmen over the types of transmissions, depending on the type their vehicle has. We are leaning towards either a CX-5, Tucson or Sportage (CVT verses Non CVT). What are the advantages/disadvantages of each, and which vehicle would you recommend.

Hi there,
All 3 of these vehicles are great choices.
CVT transmission problems are usually with vehicles up till 2010, most manufactures after this produce very good transmissions or are too new to develop 'known' problems.
CVT (1-speed) transmissions limit what you can tow and usually vehicle have a considerably lower tow rating with this type of transmission fitted. Conventional transmissions are usually a bit stronger and feel they drive a bit more directly without the revs being held high. It is very much a personal preference as to which transmission you choose, most manufactures are producing very good cvt's now and you can hardly tell what type they are as opposed to the old days where you instantly knew.
