Hi there,

I am currently preparing for my restricted test in Dec and would like to get myself a car after I got the license. Since I am not an NZ citizen (am studying here), I am quite helpless when it comes to getting myself a car (as there's no experienced people around me).

I'm hoping to receive some advice in getting a car for my future use, and would appreciate if you could give me some advice or suggestions regarding the following items:

- Any recommendations on car? My budget is below 3k and half a year use, so I would like to resell my car before I leave NZ as well. Currently I am located in Hamilton.
- What should I start with? What are the procedures / checklist in getting a (used) car? What are the "must be equipped with" items according to legal regulations?
- Since I am a learner license holder and would soon be a restricted license holder, would there be any restrictions in me owning a car?
- How should I check the car, and make sure the car works well, runs well and could be legally driven on the road? Any points to note when I go and search for a car?
- Anything I should take note of as a first time car owner?

Thanks a lot and I hope to receive some advice soon. Meanwhile I would also appreciate if anyone could give me some tips on the restricted test. Thanks!

Hi there,
We encourage you to purchase the safest car your budget allows, and always recommend getting the vehicle pre purchase inspected. Make sure any vehicle you purchase has a new warrant of fitness, as this will ensure the vehicle is safe and legal to be driven on the road.
You can look at little Toyota Corolla, Toyota Vitz/ Echo, Mazda Demio, and Honda Civic to name a few popular hatches.
