I am looking to buy a first car for my son.

A friend advised that a 1999 Audi A4 1.8litre would provide a high safety rating because of its ultra strong body.

He reckons the petrol cost would be only marginally higher and the parts are only a little more expensive than a Toyota.

I am debating between the Audi A4 and a 2000 Caldina GT.

My concern is for safety, reliability & economy.

While your friend may be correct regarding fuel consumption and parts prices, what is missing in my view is the potential number of garages visits the Audi will make in comparison to the Caldina.

Your comments around safety, economy and reliability are very valid however, when you are looking at cars in this age bracket compromises need to be made.

You also need to think about potential future running costs.

For me the Caldina ticks a lot more box’s than the Audi for a first time car owner.

Do all the necessary checks whatever you end up buying.
