I am considering purchasing a 2011 diesel Ford Fiesta.

The demo car I tried, which only had 103km on the clock, was showing an average fuel consumption figure of 6.9l/100km which I thought was very high.

The salesman told me the engine was still very stiff and was still in "running-in" mode.

Is he right?

From my research I believe the Fiesta is one of the cheapest new diesels in the compact class.

From your experience, is this a good car?

I do approx 22,000km per year which is mainly city driving.

There is an element of truth in what the salesman is saying as there is a “running-in” period for all new vehicles which can have an effect on fuel consumption.

If you do decide to buy, don’t expect the claimed Ford fuel consumption figure of 4.4l/100km to be achieved on a regular basis especially when the engine is cold, or when driving in stop/start conditions.

It should still be very impressive however, depending on how you drive and the environment you are driving in.

The new Fiesta is a great little car even the petrol models are very fuel efficient.

Remember with a diesel, you are paying Road User Charges and more for your annual registration fees. You may also be paying a price premium over the petrol options.

Certainly not a bad choice but for many a small diesel is not for them due to noise levels, the inconvenience of the RUC and for some, the smell of the fuel can be very off-putting.
