We are still on the hunt and are now looking at the 8 seater 2006 model. Will the 2.4 have to work to hard with a family of 6 on board and during weekends with a trailer. Or are we better to go with the 3.5 v6? Are they both chain driven without cvt transmission?

The 2.4 would struggle a little bit, but would not be too bad. V6 should do it with ease.
These are both chain drive engines. They come with a 4-speed standard auto, and a 6-speed cvt. So I would just check which is fitted to the cars you like.

That was my thought too about the engine. Are the cvt transmissions reliable now?

I would speak to a transmission specialist about this specific model and ask if it has known
faults. I think most are sorted after 2010, so 2006 might be in the middle of the problem ones. But not all were bad, some a bit more prone to fault than others.
