We have two large dogs and need a suitable vehicle. Were looking at a Hyundai Tuscon 2lt..has good flat high area at the back but have read conflicting info re fuel consumption.

We don't want a vehicle that's too long and we want reasonable fuel consumption. Hatches or SWs with good flat high surfaces ok (eg: Peugeot 307 SW?) What are your suggestions for options we could look at? Mostly 2 people 2 dogs - sometimes 3 people 2 dogs?

Thanks,

Alistair

The Hyundai Tuscon is a very good, reliable vehicle. Yes, compared to a stationwagon you could expect an increase in fuel consumption, though the Tucson city (a 2WD version of the Tucson) would be more economical than a 4WD version, as well as considerably cheaper to buy and maintain.

Buying new, a Peugeot 307SW (petrol) is listed at $39,990 while a Tuscon city is just $28,990. The Puegeot offers a premium European appeal, but the small amount of fuel savings you'll achieve will take an age to cover its $11,000 premium in retail purchase price.

The Skoda Roomster may be worth a look, three passengers and two large dogs may be a squeeze, but certainly the more common situation of two people, two dogs you mention would be a comfortable fit.

The rear seating can be lifted in/out easily to create a 5,4,3 or 2 seat configuration and you'll get a quality European vehicle with plenty of character, Volkswagen group reliability/fuel economy as well as a five-star safety rating for under $30,000. The diesel option though would best suit your needs at $35,990.

Otherwise Subaru's Impreza station wagon or Forester could also suit.

For more info on the Roomster read our car review and test evaluation.
